The Christmas Candle – A Movie in the Making

Samantha Barks first starring role after Les Misérables

Susan Boyle feature film debut

London, January (February 28, 2013)_ Production started this week on THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE on location in the UK and the Isle of Man. Directed by John Stephenson (Five Children and It), starring Hans Matheson (Clash of the Titans, Sherlock Holmes), Samantha Barks (Les Misérables) and Lesley Manville (Another Year, Vera Drake).   Also starring are Sylvester McCoy (The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Doctor Who), John Hannah (The Mummy, Four Weddings and A Funeral) and Barbara Flynn (Miss Potter, The Borgias) with James Cosmo (Braveheart, Game of Thrones) and introducing Susan Boyle.

THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE is a timeless and inspirational story.   Nothing out of the ordinary ever happens in the small village of Gladbury  — except at Christmas.   Legend has it that every twenty-five years an angel visits the village candlemaker and touches a single candle. Whoever lights the Christmas Candle will see their request granted on Christmas Eve. But in 1890, at the dawn of the modern age, all that is about to change.  With the arrival of David Richmond (Hans Matheson), a skeptical, young minister, Gladbury’s humble candlemaker, Edward Haddington (Sylvester McCoy) must fight to preserve his family’s legacy. When the Christmas Candle goes missing, the miraculous and the human collide in the most astonishing Christmas the town of Gladbury has ever seen.

THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE is written by Eric Newman and Candace Lee.   The film is based on the novella of the same name by best-selling author Max Lucado.   The director of photography is Mike Brewster (Jack the Giant Slayer, The Harry Potter series: 2nd Unit DP), production designer is Tony Noble (Moon, The Divide) and Chris Gill (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, 28 Days Later) serves as editor.  Casting is by Ros and John Hubbard.

“We are absolutely delighted with the cast we have assembled for the film, and we are thrilled to have Samantha Barks in her first starring role after Les Misérables. Samantha has arrived on our set fresh from her performance at Sunday’s Academy Awards. We also have the privilege of working with Susan Boyle in her feature film debut.  It has been a joy to watch these emerging talents come along side established artists like Hans Matheson, Lesley Manville, Sylvester McCoy, John Hannah, Barbara Flynn and James Cosmo to bring this story to life,” commented producers Tom Newman and Candace Lee.

Samantha Barks said “Having just landed from the Academy Awards I had an hour to unpack and repack and get to set.  I’m very excited to be part of The Christmas Candle and I’m loving every second.”

Talking about her first acting role Susan Boyle said “I can’t believe I’m making a film!  I’m very excited to be a part of The Christmas Candle.  Everyone on set is a delight to work with and it’s a fantastic experience to be part of the team.  I’m really enjoying getting dressed in the period costumes and stepping back in time and although it’s very cold filming on location, I’m wearing long johns under my bustle.

THE CHRISTMAS CANDLE  is an Impact and Big Book Media Production presented by Pinewood Pictures.  Tom Newman (End of the Spear, Home Run) and Candace Lee produce for Impact.  Hannah Leader, former co-owner of Capitol Films, produces for Big Book Media.
