Speaking to the church, Jesus didn’t issue individual assignments. He said, “You—all of you, collectively—will be my witnesses” (Acts 1:8 NIV). Jesus works in community. For that reason you find no personal pronouns in the earliest description of the church in Acts. All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship; and to sharing in meals; and to prayer. And all the believers met together in one place and shared everything they had. They worshiped together and shared their meals with great joy” (Acts 2:42-46 NLT).
The cameo contains only plural nouns and pronouns. No I or my or you. We are in this together. “He is the head of the body, which is the church” (Colossians 1:18 NCV). I am not the body, you are not the body. We—together—are his body!
