Jesus’ heart was heavied by the news of the murder of John the Baptist, so he took the disciples on a retreat. But then came the crowd, a multitude of misery and sickness bringing nothing but requests. Jesus treated them with kindness. The disciples didn’t share his compassion. Jesus simply issued an assignment to them: “You give them something to eat.” So the disciples tallied their resources. “We only have five loaves and two fish” (Matthew 14:17 NKJV).
How do you suppose Jesus felt about the basket examination? Do you think he was hoping someone might count to eight? “Well, let’s see. We have five loaves, two fish, and…Jesus!” You see, standing next to the disciples was the solution to their problems…but they did not go to him. They stopped at seven and worried. Don’t do likewise. Count to eight. Better still, count on Christ.
